——————–

What does it take to make a song?

An idea, a melody, inspiration, determination and the need to express what cannot be done through words?

I don’t exactly know what the answer is to that, but I think I’ve tried over and over again to be able to do such. This is obvious enough for people who know me well enough that I have been composing for years now, starting with one small wind instrument to Digital Audio Workstations.

And now, this post of mine speaks of what I call an achievement from all my efforts in trying to compose my own original songs. I cannot guarantee that everyone would love it as it is with any other song from any other group, band or artist, but I surely believe that this is, as of now, my greatest accomplishment in music.

====================

Okay. The epic-sounding part is over. Time to get straight to the point. XD

This post is all about my newest composition, using only FL Studio, Noteworthy Composer and a hell of a lot of the greatest VST plugins I could find.

It’s based on one of my very first MIDI compositions actually. Right here:

Ahh. Midology Episode 1 – Mid Evolution. A series of MIDIs I made (and currently making) with the titles as tributes to Machinae Supremacy’s epic Sidology trilogy. I’ll be needing to explain a bit more about this MIDI…

The first song I ever made (called SONG01 by NWC defaults XD) was my first attempt at making my own MIDIs, finally, after finding a composing program I can live with. But the first one that I really worked on was MidEp1. Heck, the original version doesn’t sound at all like this revised one. I had much to learn (and still learning =D) about music composition, really XD

Its original title, or codename, was Broken Dream. And so there’s the connection between what this post is about and the original.

Okay, so I’m done explaining MidEp1. Now on to Unbroken Dream.

The process of making this…was…not simple. Not by a long shot. NOT AT ALL. CHRIST’S SAKE, I SPENT THREE STRAIGHT DAYS RESEARCHING ABOUT ALL THIS JUST TO GET A GOOD SOUND OUT OF FL STUDIO ._O CONSTANT HEADACHES, LOSS OF APPETITE? DAMMIT WHY WAS IT SO DAMN HAAAAAAAAAAAARDDDDDD

Anyway, yeah. Sorry for the small rant there, and sorry for the more to come.

I learned many things about actual DAW composing actually. And it’s something that SHOULD be passed down to musicians everywhere trying to make their own songs. And so here’s my own little list of rules:

1) Put into notes anything that comes into your mind that sounds good. As in, ASAP. Don’t you dare let the ideas go away, for I assure you, they do.

2) When making a certain genre, compare your song and all its qualities to the kind of sound you want to get by using another actual song. And by all qualities, I mean every single bit of the song. Filter out every instrument. Take note at their volumes. Their panning. Their pitch. And every other detail. I’m telling you, EVERYTHING counts.

3) TRIAL & ERROR. This is very important. You have to constantly check the way the song sounds. Putting the 2nd rule to use, compare and contrast everything until you arrive at a point that suits the sound you’re looking for. Compare and contrast. COMPARE and contrast. COMPARE AND CONTRAST. You might thank me for making you remember that, and it really does matter and help you with your final sound.

By following those rules, check out my project folder and see what happened.

Trial & Error it is. Look at BETA2’s number of beta MP3s. That’s way more than the number of MIDI betas I usually have. Then again, composing MIDI and MP3s can differ in so many ways, like…difficulty ;_;

====================

So this post will finally come to an end. And if you read through all of that text, damn, thanks much, you didn’t waste my typing. XD

Here’s your reward then. THIS is what the post is all about.

The result of everything I’ve gone through. I can only hope that you enjoy it. If not, then at least acknowledge my efforts for it.

Once more, thanks.
